Course Overview

This course will introduce the global energy industry, its stakeholders, technologies, and resources. Our focus will be on the major economic, technological, environmental, regulatory, and social factors that affect the energy industry. Among other topics, we will cover: electrical generation; fossil, nuclear, and renewable energy resources; transportation fuels; and energy storage. In addition to technologies and resources, we will also introduce energy trends, policy, and regulatory issues. The overall course goal is to provide you with a strong basic foundation in energy resources and technology.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the historical development, production, and consumption of the energy resources in use around the world today and identify key industry trends likely to affect the next 20 to 30 years.
  • Explain the global distribution of primary energy resources – including coal, oil & gas, nuclear, and renewables – and the technologies employed to convert them for beneficial use.
  • Explain and apply basic energy science and metrics including energy density, power vs. energy, emissions, and environmental consequences of energy use.
  • Identify key regulatory and policy issues surrounding the use of energy and explain their effects on the energy industry and its stakeholders
