This course introduces the global energy industry, its stakeholders, technologies, and resources. The focus will be on the major economic, technological, environmental, regulatory, and social factors that affect the energy industry. Topics covered, among others, include electrical generation; fossil, nuclear, and renewable energy resources; transportation fuels; and energy storage. In addition to technologies and resources, there is an introduction to energy trends, policy, and regulatory issues. The overall course goal is to provide students with a strong basic foundation in energy resources and technology.

This course provides an understanding of economics and the impact of location, resources, and geography on global energy markets. As such, the course examines various aspects of world energy markets with applications to business and policy. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the geographic distribution of global energy resources and the economic markets that govern their use (and the impact of political systems on the markets). In addition, students will have to opportunity to develop a basic skill set of managerial economics tools for understanding and assessing global energy markets. The course will address the impact of geography, supply and demand characteristics, market failures, and their impact on market structure and on price formation. Included in these markets are the global oil market, markets for refined products, the North American and global natural gas markets, and electric power markets. In addition, the impact of externalities on markets, as well as energy efficiency, security, and sustainability will be a focus of the course.

This course will help students understand what leaders do, and how they think and adapt to an ever-changing strategic and operational landscape. Students will learn how leaders deliver results through others by engaging stakeholders and fostering organizational practices which motivate people and teams and foster a values-driven, ethical culture. This course emphasizes the practical application of leadership theories; students are encouraged to apply and integrate the output of a various individual and organizational assessment tools into operation in their own organizational and/or academic experience.

This course is designed to familiarize students with the science behind energy sources and their utilization. This course focuses on both fossil fuel and renewable/alternative sources of energy. It examines what technical challenges and opportunities motivate the establishment of an energy platform based on those sources.
