Michael J. Orlando is Executive Director and Lecturer with the J.P. Morgan Center for Commodities & Energy Management at the University of Colorado Denver Business School. He lectures on corporate and project finance, political risk analysis for business strategy and stakeholder relations, as well as the fundamentals of commodity and energy businesses. Dr. Orlando is also a consultant to the Firm at Econ One Research, where his practice provides advisory services and expert testimony on matters related to energy, resources, and infrastructure in various dispute resolution forums, including regulatory hearings, state and Federal court proceedings, and international arbitration tribunals.

Dr. Orlando has over 30 years of experience in the energy and resource sectors, spanning business, government, and education. He began his career with Shell Oil Company, where he worked as a reservoir and environmental engineer, conducting profitability analyses for exploration and development projects in the Gulf of Mexico. He later served as a Research Economist in the Federal Reserve System, and then as Vice President and Branch Executive of the Fed’s Denver Branch, where he was responsible for regional economic research, energy commodity markets analysis, policy advising, and public communication. Previous instructional affiliations include those with the Department of Economics at Washington University in St. Louis, the Energy Business and Finance program at The Pennsylvania State University, and the Master of Finance program at Tulane University.

Dr. Orlando’s research spans a range of topics in applied microeconomics. He has published on economic geography and industrial demography, network economics, energy and environmental policy, financial regulatory policy, and corporate governance. He has also co-authored a textbook on money and banking. An award-winning instructor and frequently invited speaker, he has taught courses on macro and microeconomics, corporate finance, economics, and strategy for ESG issues, energy business management, and commodity markets.
